Thousands Met the Museum - A Really Big Party in Palm Springs.

It was the hugest party you’re ever going to attend. Overriding the attendance goal of 1000, almost 1200 revelers stormed the Palm Springs Art Museum on April 10. It was the 4th annual Meet the Museum night, and the biggest ever.

Jamie Kabler originated the mass gathering as a gay night, to involve more of a large segment of Palm Springs residents with the museum. The gambit is join the museum plus go to a party. By 2009, the event morphed into an all-persuasion art (and party) lover occasion, despite coinciding with the annual White Party weekend, the annual gay mecca to our resort town.

Every area of the E. Stewart Williams-designed museum was invaded by high-spirited participants….from the sculpture gardens below to the galleries-now-disco above. We queued to have our posterized picture (think the Obama Hope emblem) taken. And rested our high heels in the Annenberg theater where David Wills had devised an amusing film loop. Everything from Russ Meyers sex kittens in heat kind of clips to an insect-inspired Thierry Mugler fashion show, presumably from the 1980s.

[Oh, Thierry, come back to us. Just because you made a fortune on that chocolate-smelling perfume and basically retired, fashionistas need you.]

The afterparty rocked on at the contemporary masterpiece home of Shari Applebaum. BTW, we may have mentioned that architectural photographer Julius Shulman is shooting it for his next book. La Applebaum skipped about in a dotty Marni frock on Guiseppe Zanotti stilettos, as usual winning for best dressed.

Favors, highlighted by pendants that lit up forever, were found by Shari and her pal/decorator J. Jones at the new Party Lab warehouse on North Indian Canyon. Servers passed among us offering treats. Their fingers were ablaze with glittering costume rings, which the guests soon commandeered.
