Palm Springs ShortFest Meets the Press

Film Critic John Anderson, who contributes to the New York Times, moderated the panel. He cautioned the young filmmakers about promising a scoop to one Times (N.Y) but giving it to another (L.A.).

A panel of distinguished film writers discussed the problems of the profession – less access to the stars – an industry that expects them to write much like a trailer, forget thoughtful pieces – the terminal state of print journalism…giving it 5 to 30 more years (?). And the hazards of speed versus accuracy.

But, in the Q and A, a blunt how-about-us question from the young filmmaker set them on another course. He wanted to know how to reach the press. Find an angle, what’s special about your movie, was the consensus. Pitch a critic who writes about your kind of project. Time does not permit screening a slush pile of random films. So, in short, try to create a buzz. Enter, and if possible, win film festivals. Oh yes, that’s why we were all there.
